Woodlands

Society uses the resources from our woodlands for just about everything imaginable.  We use our woodland resources to build shelters, create energy and to produce consumer goods.  Today, the upper Midwest still contains hundreds of thousands of acres of woodlands which can be divided into two very different, but equally impressive biomes: the deciduous and coniferous forests.  These plant communities hold immense value to the world around us providing habitat, recreation, numerous ecological and environmental benefits.  The protection and restoration of our woodlands is of the utmost importance.

Our woodlands continue to be degraded by human behavior and invasive species. Woodland management efforts can enhance high quality woodlands to ensure their future and can include restoring degraded areas from understory to canopy. The restoration of woodlands can include a variety of practices including: invasive species removal and treatment (buckthorn, emerald ash borer, etc), seeding and planting, controlled burning, selective thinning, biomass removal, TSI – (timber stand improvement) and more depending on the condition of the site.

Restoring these natural areas is what we do.  MNL ecologists have the knowledge and experience needed to assess your site and determine the most ecologically appropriate plan to reach your project goals and implement that plan.    Considering the diversity and complexity of a quality woodland each project is unique.  Our years of experience with a multitude of approaches can help calculate what is best for your woodland. If you are looking to enhance your trees or understory, create better wildlife habitat or just create a diverse natural area MNL can work for you.
