Bioengineering MNL now offers a wide variety of bioengineering practices to aid in erosion control with the use of natural materials. The focus of our efforts have lied in the use of wetland trees and shrubs to stabilize highly erodable soils. Certain willow (Salix sp) and dogwood (Cornus sp) species can be cut while in dormancy and preserved until an appropriate planting time. They can then be installed in a variety of methods including stakes and waddles, after which they have the ability to form fibrous root systems. The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MNDot) has found increasing uses for these practices in right-of-way wetland situations.
