Installation Considerations
The use of native plant communities can be implemented in many landscape situations. Deciding what type of plant community is appropriate for your site should be based on what you are trying to achieve and what the conditions of the site will support. It is also important to plan ahead and make sure that the proper timing, procedures and materials are used when attempting to establish native plant communities.
A diverse short dry prairie? A wetland edge?
What are the positive attributes? What are the things that need to be eliminated? Some native trees and shrubs can usually be preserved and incorporated into the new landscape design. Certain exotic species can be a hindrance to restoration efforts, such as Reed canary grass (Phalaris arundinacea), Purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria), Crown vetch (Coronilla varia) and Bull Thistle (Cirsium vulgare). Have a good idea about the flow of events well in advance to ensure the best results and satisfaction. A properly timed herbicide application plan on at least one full growing season is critical for most successful restoration for establishment projects. Use quality, tested seed with a known local genetic origin for best results. |
