Savannas incorporate the elements of native woody vegetation with an
understory of somewhat shade tolerant herbaceous prairie species. The
savanna landscape is dotted with an occasional Oak tree or Aspen clone,
but still maintains an open sunlight characteristic to it. Savannas are
common in the transition areas between prairie landscapes and more heavily
wooded areas.
Understory or ground cover species include many of the same species that occur
in a prairie, plus some of the following savanna species.
