Fire
has been an ally of herbaceous vegetation native to Minnesota for
centuries. Unfortunately,
the settlement of our state in the 1800’s resulted in our strict
suppression of the very fires that have been not only beneficial but
also critical to the survival and success of native ecosystems.
The wildfires that once raced untamed across the Great Plains,
invigorated the growth of prairies, shorelines and wetlands as well as
maintained the integrity of savanna areas.
They have hindered the movement of woody species into the grassy
prairies and wetlands and would recycle vast amounts of natural
nutrients for all ecosystems.
Conducting
a prescribed burn at Gustavus Aldolphus College
To successfully mimic these processes, prescribed burns
have been used regularly on remnant or restored natural areas.
These controlled burns are performed by an experienced, qualified
crew to ensure a safe, successful burn.
